# 名词的定义

名词是用来表示人、事物、地点以及抽象事物的名称(A noun is the name of a person or thing)。

例如：

名词的分类标准有很多，依照不同的标准，就有不同的分类。

一般来讲，英语中的名词通常分为两大类：专有名词(proper noun)和普通名词(common noun)。

我们先来简单列举以下专有名词。专有名词主要包括：

人名及头衔

比如: Winston Churchill, the Queen of English, the President of the United States, Doctor Mathews, Professor Samuels等。
著作名称

比如:

War and Peace（《战争与和平》）

The Merchant of Venice（《威尼斯商人》）

Pride and Prejudice（《傲慢与偏见》）
月份

一年中的12个月份名称：January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December。
星期、四季

一周七天是：Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday。

一年四季是：winter, summer, spring, autumn。
节日

比如：Christmas, Easter, New Year's Day, Mother's Day, Thanksgiving Day等。
地理名词
- 国家及大洲的名称
  
  如：America, Africa, Europe, Asia, England, Scotland, China, Peru, Albania等。
- 地区、城市的名称
  
  如：Rome, Vancouver, Beijing, Florence, California, Florida等。
- 江、河、湖泊的名称
  
  如：the Atlantic, the Dead Sea, the Pacific, Lake Victoria, Lake Michigan, the Rhine, the Thames, the Nile等。
- 山脉、沙漠的名称
  
  如：the Himalayas, the Alps, the Sahara等。

从上面的表格可以看到，普通名词根据"是否可以被分割"分为可数名词(countable noun)和不可数名词(uncountable noun)。

对于名词，最重要的分类莫过于可数名词与不可数名词了。

这一分类是学习英语名词用法的核心，因为它关系到很多问题，比如可数名词变复数的问题，限定词修饰名词的问题，还有是一个名词用作可数与不可数，意义上的差别。

此外，根据名词的构成，我们可将名词分为简单名词和复合名词。

简单名词就是组成部分不可被分割的名词，比如story, student和teachar等。英文中绝大多数是简单名词。

复合名词就是由若干单词组合而构成的名词，比如girlfriend, roommate和mother-in-law等等。
